tlOO While waiting for the Governor, the Vice-Chairman asked if any of the Board members had anything they wished to bring before the Board. I~ Mr. Peterson spoke about the possibility of increas- ing the Congressional appropriation to include a specific amount of money to start construction of the Paonia Project. He believes the Board and the Director should make plans to give all the assistance possible to our Congressional Dele- gation, and those of neighboring States, to get this appro- priation increased so that construction on this project can be started as soon as possible. Dean Crawford said that a telegram had been re- ceived that morning from Senator Carroll in which he, Sena- tor Carroll, said prospects for an appropriation for Paonia were very good - that he expected to put in for a million dollars appropriation for the start of Paonia. This tele- gram, as follows, was read by Mr. Peterson: Ivan C. Crawford, Dir. Colorado Water Conservation Board, 212 State Office Building Denver On Wednesday Bureau of Reclamation filed application for withdrawal from Public Entry of 3,043 acres of land for recla- mation uses in connection with Paonia Project. Appropriation hearings on Reclamation Projects start in House on March 3rd. Senate hearings not yet scheduled. It is my intention to ask for one million dollars in initial construction funds for Paonia. Strong support of Senators O'Mahoney, Anderson, Hay- den, Murray, Mansfield, Chavez and other Western Democratic Senators for funds for western water projects ready for con- struction indicates excellent possibility of getting construc- tion money for Paonia this year. John A. Carroll MR. BARNARD, JR.: "I think something should be ~men- tioned about the National policy in regard I to new starts on projects. The Paonia was started something like twenty years ago and we ought to emphasize that point. Do you wish a resolution or motion on the lines of what you have in mind, Mr. Peter- son?"
