I

I

857

,
,

Mr. Nelson brought up the subject of a package
proposal to go to Congress from several Western States ask-
ing for appropr~ations on reclamation projects. He said
that Senator Watkins had recently 'broke down' and asked
that Paonia and Vernal be included in appropriations this
year.

MR. PETERSON: "I am a little bit concerned about
Paonia being connected with any other
project. I believe, since it has an old
start, it should be given consideration
alone."

MR. CRAWFORD: "I should like to state that both
the Governor and I appeared before the
Budget Committee last year and emphasized
the fact that this was not a new project,
that it had been started quite a few
years ago."

MR. BARNARD, JR: "I move that Mr. Sparks be authorized
and directed to prepare a resolution ex-
pressing the very strong sentiment of
this Board that the elimination of the
Paonia project from the national budget
for the current year on the basis that
it is a 'new start' is based on incor-
rect facts and that funds for this proj-
ect should definitely be made available
in the coming fiscal year."

MR. LEW WILLIAMS: "I second the motion."

MR. MOSES: "Are you ready for the question?"
MR. NELSON: "Question."

The motion was unanimously carried.

Mr. Peterson said that he had heard the feasibility
of the Curecanti is being questioned due to lack of power re-
quirements within the area it would serve. He believes the
power connections would alleviate the shortage of power in
Eastern Colorado if the project was constructed at this time
and that the Board should watch to see that Curecanti does
not fall by the wayside because of this question, if it is
true.
