And over the past couple of years <br /> <br />6 they have come to a similar conclusion that the most practical <br /> <br />7 approach to flood control on the Fountain Creek is a project <br /> <br />8 which will provide channelization and a levy system rather tha <br /> <br />9 a dam, to provide for handling of flow of up to 72,000 cfs. <br /> <br />10 The last large flood on the Fountain Creek was in <br /> <br />11 1965, and at that time, the flow was somewhere in the neighbor <br /> <br />12 <br /> <br /> <br />13 <br /> <br /> <br />14 <br /> <br /> <br />15 <br /> <br /> <br />16 <br /> <br /> <br />17 <br /> <br /> <br />18 <br /> <br /> <br />19 <br /> <br /> <br />20 <br /> <br /> <br />21 <br /> <br /> <br />22 <br /> <br /> <br />23 <br /> <br /> <br />24 <br /> <br /> <br />25 <br /> <br />hood of 47,000 cfs. The hundred-year flood level is somewhere <br /> <br />in the neighborhood of 60,000. The 72,000 is not standard. <br /> <br />It's about a 140-year flood. <br /> <br />The reason for not going to a full standard project <br /> <br />is that this would require the replacement of all of the major <br /> <br />or at least two--bridges across the Fountain; and therefore, <br /> <br />the cost benefit situation gets down below one. So the Corp <br /> <br />is proposing at this point in time to include to recommend the <br /> <br /> <br />inclusion in the 1981 budget--I guess which will be approved <br /> <br /> <br />sometime the fall of this year--funds for the final design and <br /> <br /> <br />construction of a channelization and levy project on the Foun- <br /> <br />tain at a cost something in excess of $6 million, which will <br /> <br />provide flood protection for both downtown Pueblo and the lowe <br /> <br />east side. <br />
