V;7c...J

I

have the concrete problem at deer and elk
crossings when they try to cross the canal.
Also at the head of each of the siphon struc-
tures and similar structures we will put these
safety ladder-type structures where if a deer
gets in the canal or a child or anyone else,
they float down the siphon and this stairway
effect pushes them right up out of the canal
rather than letting them go down into the
siphon structures. These will be incorporated
into our canal design.

The twelfth recommendation, the one that
Larry mentioned that has been quite contro-
versial, and that is 'acquire and develop
14,000 acres of private land and 2,840 acres of
public land on Oak Ridge at a cost of $900,000
to mitigate losses of big game habitat caused
by the project'. This is a picture of Oak
Ridge looking at it from the west from the end
of the Ridge. This is the Oak Ridge area
through here. These are our project land areas
down here shown in yellow in the bottom of the
valley. This is the area here.

As an alternate to that it was recommended
by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife
of providing a buffer zone along the Josephine
Canal along with getting easements or leases
on the Oak Creek land. This sketch shows the
possibilities of a buffer zone along there as
an alternate to this to go along with leasing
of private lands rather than the outright
purchase.

I

I'd like to point out here that the Yellow
Jacket Canal comes from under Oak Ridge by a
tunnel up here and comes into the head of the
Little Beaver Valley. Right at this point we
have a drop in the canal. the canal drops down
a hillside to get down into the lower land.
At that point we could take out a small ditch
on grade, on elevation coming around here like
this and this lIone through here, which equals
about 1,000 acres as shown on the map, could
