I

I

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. SPARKS:

~V/.L

available. That caused me to go over the
mapping program because, as you know, there
is an emphasis throughout the United States
on getting adequate maps for every section
of the country which do not now exist, and
particularly in Colorado much of it has not
been accurately mapped, at least on the scale
necessary to conduct any type of a project
investigation, mining, or what have you.
Through the assistance of Dr. Clark, we have,
for the first time, been able to point that
mapping program to our project investigation.
That should have been done many, many years
ago and then we wouldn't have come up against
the proposition where we put up large sums of
money without additional sums being made avail-
able by the United States Government.

The United States Geological Survey con-
ducts the mapping on a 50-50 basis. That is,
they contribute half the money and the state
contributes half. But we have not taken ad-
vantage of those matching funds by the United
States Geological Survey. So with Dr. Clark's
help, we have tried now to present a program
to the United States Geological Survey based
upon the needs of water resource development
so that in future years, when these project
investigations come along, we will have the
maps. 'I!e won't have to pour in money without
matching funds. Our program this year will
cost around $120,000 and the state already
has some money set aside for that purpose.
But the point is that we are now trying to
coordinate thoSe efforts towards specific
projects that we can foresee in the future
wi thin the State of Colorado. 1,'[1: hope to keep
up that program every year.

I think, Mr. Chairman, that concludes my
report."

"How about publications? Have you got any
in the mill at the present time?"

"Ne have one publication that is now com-
pleted. \-Ie are waiting on the elements -
the binding elements - which should be here
within a week or two and that publication
will then be forwarded to the Board. This
publication is entitled '~ater Conservation
