1

I

to see what amendments we could live with
in this bill.

Let me go back. The re are two things
that the minority report recommended. One
was that the Senate Bill, S. l74, be substi-
tuted in its entirety for the House Bill.
The other one suggested a number of amendments.
We have put this bill together with the one
that was actually reported out from Committee
together with the amendments and will have
that ready for distribution to interested
people shortly. I think we should look this
over very carefully and see what, if any, of
these suggested amendments we might be able
to live with in Colorado. Some of them" are
not bad. Some of them, I think, are very
detrimental to our state interests. But I
do think we should do this and get together
with Mr. Aspinall and see just what we can
live with. He is, not single-handed of
course, he has the majority of the Committee,
but Mr. Aspinall, (Mrs. Pfost will not be in
the Congress during the next session), faces
a well-organized and very well-financed group
of conservationists who are going to leave no
stone un turned to defeat the bill Which Mr.
Aspinall came out with and I think he is going
to need a lot of help and a lot of support
from the state and I frankly feel that he
would be open to suggestions as to how far
the state feels he could go in some sort of
a compromise.

The next item is . .

"

MR. EAKES:

"Mr. Kuiper, may I interrupt just a
moment?"

MR. KUIPER:

"Yes, go ahead."

MR. EAKES:

"I'd like to comment on one thing that
happened that migbt be interesting to the
Board on the Wilderness Bill. The wildlifers
have even sent representatives, field workers,
into western Colorado to get petitions signed
and build up support in Congressman Aspinall's
