own district for the vlilderness Senate Bill.
So this is going on even in the grass roots."

MR. PETERSON:

"I'd like to comment on your suggestion,
Len. I'm wondering if these proposed amend-
ments that we are to go over - I'm wondering
if it's a good plan to make those public. We
don't know for sure just exactly how many of
these amendments it would be necessary to
compromise on before the bill would be passed."

1

l-lR. KUIPER:

"Pete, first, the amendments are public."

MR. PETERSON:

"But our approval of the amendments is not
public. "

MR. KUIPER:

"I think I could go along with you there.
I think this discussion should be somewhat
confidential with Congressman Aspinall so that
his hand is not completely tipped. I think
that's what you are getting at."

MR. PETERSON:

"Right."

MR. KUIPER:

"Before the session opens this is going to
be a pretty delicate thing. When you look at
the opposition that Mr. Aspinall is facing it
is quite formidable and I think he is going to
need a lot of help and a lot of support in
order to protect what appear to be the best
interests of the state of Colorado. I do
think this, that we should reiterate again
that the Board's position was not in opposition
to a wilderness bill. That the position the
Board took last year was that wilderness,
properly handled, is good and would be good
for the state. The only thing we objected to
was the way the handling was suggested in the
bill, that we do not think is good for the
the state."

MR. PETERSON:

"Inasmuch as this is a wilderness bill,
regardless of what final form it comes out
in, that will effect various agencies of the
State of Colorado, it seems to me that this
is a problem that should be resolved from the
state level through the Director of Natural

1
