562

1

MR. NELSON: "Does the motion before the Board cover
any change in this $40,000 for 1958?"
MR. ~mSES : "That will be a separate motion."
MR. CRAWFORD: ....May I call your attention to page two
of this letter which states:

'The rate of increase of the cooperative
program is, of course, contingent upon the
availability of Federal funds for 50-50
matching with State funds. The Bureau of
the Budget has already established a ceil-
ing on the funds to be made available to
the Geological Survey in fiscal year 1958,
and, before the State Legislature adjourns
next spring, the ceiling for fiscal year
1959 probably will have been established.
It is urgent, therefore, that I be in a
position to advise our Washington office
at the earliest possible date concerning
major increases in State offerings for
matching with Federal funds for cooperative
ground-water studies. I believe that with
early notification the Survey may be able
to match a moderate increase in funds over
and above the $40,000 anticipated in fiscal
year 1958 and if the State budget for fis-
cal year 1959 can be made known before the
Bureau of the Budget establishes the ceil-
ings for fiscal year 1959, I am confident
that the Geological Survey can match a greatly
increased amount of funds in fiscal year
1959.'

I should like to move that our request
for appropriations for ground-water studies
which now stands at $40,000 be increased to
$50,000."

MR. PETERSON:

'70u are increasing that amount by
$10,000. Couldn't your motion be made a
little more flexible? It might be possible
that the Federal funds could be increased.
Shouldn't we ask perhaps for an increase to
$100,000?"

1

)1m. CRAWFORD:

'~e have some other things coming along.
I am sure there is no hope of getting $100,000
from the U. S. Geological Survey to match this
appropriation. Is that right, Mr. Bell?"
