4:.!~4

HR. STAPLETON:

:MR. SLIZESKI:

in the work that the Bureau has been doing on
repair of irrigation facilities. All of you
are informed on the irrigation needs of Colo-
rado and are aware, I am sure, of the devastat-
ing damage that occurred in the South Platte
and the Arkansas and their tributaries during
the flood. The work is well under way on repair I
of these facilities. Many of the repairs are
in the nature of stop-gap measures. The damage
in the South Platte Basin totaled somewhat in
the neighborhood of $l~ million. Those in the
Arkansas probably will reach $l million. Ne
are letting contracts, (we let one yesterday),
for major repairs on the Purgatoire, and on
some damage to the Highline Canal belonging to
the City of Denver. I think we can safely
report that we either have or are well on the
way to getting water in all the ditches so
that the crop damage can be held to a minimum.
Many of these facilities will not be completely
repaired until after the irrigation season.
Diversion structures are going to have to be
buttressed. Many of the systems are choked with
silt and they are operating with limited capa-
cities. So at the present time their function
is only adequate, if adequate, and a great deal
of work will have to be done to get them fully
operative.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman."

"Thank you, Pat. We IIlill withhold any
questions until we get a few more of these
reports.

I'll now call on ~~. Slizeski from the
Corps of Engineers, Omaha, who has been out in
Colorado for the last three or four weeks con-
tinually. Joe, would you make your report,
please?"

I

"Ur. Stapleton, members of the Board, gen-
tlemen, our formal report submitted to the
Board is rather brief. It deals with flood
plain information studies; it deals with the
Chatfield Dam planning; and our survey planning
for flood control and water resources in the
