..

3.Af Seeding Material

Both the pyrotechnic devices and the acetone
burners will -.J:tilize a silver iodide - arroniurn iodate o:rnplex. 'fue
silver iodide materials have been checked for ice nuclei yield in
the Colorado State University cloud simulation chamber. Nuclei
yield rates cbtained fran these tests will be used in rraking seeding
concentratior: calculations.

3.5 Airborne Sensors

'fue tv.u Navajo aircraft will be equipped with
sensors and a data re=rding system to record relative humidity,
temperature, altitude, airspeed, position and tinE. One of the air-
craft will al.so have the capability to rreasure and record liquid
water =ntent and ice crystal counts.

3.6 O:rnnunications

3.6.1

Air to Ground

Air to ground ccrnnuncations will be
accc:xt;>lished t..'u:ough the use of a VHF net operating on 155.100 MHz.
'fue base station will be at the Operations Center with each aircraft
having a dedicated transceiver.

3.6.2

Ground to Gro\IDd

A camercial telephone will be installed
at the Operations Center for use in alerting aircrews, Garden City
NWS radar repeater link, BUREC envirolllTEntal data netv.urk ccmputer
terminal, and general administrative use. A drop on this same
telephone circuit will be located in the Project Director's quarters.

3. 7 Weather Radar

Storm rronitoring and seeding control will be with
a C-Band radar located at the Lakin Airport Project O[::erations Center.
'fue radar \IDit has PPI and RHI scopes with digital re=rding and
replay capability. '!he unit has an Irband aircraft transpor:der
interrogator for use in tracking seeder aircraft. Aircraft beacon
signals can be displayed on the radar PPI scope to pennit plotting
of seeder aircraft position relative to the echo area.

Broad scale radar coverage will be obtained fran
the National weather Service \VSR-57 radar at Garden City or Lim:>n.
Readout fran these NWS radar will be at selected intervals using a
telefacsimile repeater unit installed in the Operations Center.

When paper ropy is made of echo displays, seeding
locations will be transposed fran the radar scope to the paper ropy.
