<br />.' <br /> <br />,;. <br /> <br />3.0 El2UIPMENT & FACILITIES <br />3.1 Operations Center <br /> <br />Operations and control activities will be =nsoli- <br />dated in the project building at Lakin AirpJrt. '!his building will <br />accarodate the weather radar and ccmnunications facilities, as well <br />as weather analysis and project administrative functions. As such, <br />it will be the principal operating location for the Project Director. <br /> <br />3.2 Seeder Aircraft <br /> <br />~ Navajo turJ:xx:harged twin engine aircraft will <br />serve as the primary seeder aircraft for the program, with a single <br />engine T-34 aircraft being available for daytiJre and cloud base <br />seeding. <br /> <br />'l11e Navajo aircraft and crews will be based at <br />LaJr..in Airport where they will have direct access to the weather <br />observations, forecasts and the project radar observations. The <br />crews will be available for dispatch on short notice by the Project <br />Director. Provisions will be made to recycle the aircraft fran air- <br />ports at Codge City, Tribune and Johnson when weather conditions are <br />not suitable for aircraft recovery at Lakin. llie Navajo aircraft will <br />be equipped with IrBand transponders, v.'eather avoidance radar, J:1>lE and <br />the full canoliment of avionics needed for IFR fliaht. <br /> <br />'l11e T- 34 aircraft and pilot will be based at <br />Johnson Airport and will be used for clom base seeding during daylight <br />hours. It will be equipped with the standard ccmpl:irrent of flight <br />instrurrents and avionics I plus an Irband transponder. <br /> <br />All seeder aircraft will be on "restricted" status <br />and ,rill be certified airworthy under appropriate FM regulations. <br /> <br />3. 3 Seeding revices <br /> <br />3.3.1 <br /> <br />Droppable Pyrotec11l1ics <br /> <br />The two primary seeder aircraft will be <br />equipped with ejection racks, each having a capacity of 96 37mn drop- <br />pable pyrotechnic cartridges. The pyrotedlllic cartridges will each <br />have a silver iodide content of 20 grams with a burn tirre of 60 <br />seconds. All of the ejected rrBterial is consurred in the burn, thereby <br />leaving nothing to fall to the ground. <br /> <br />3.3.2 <br /> <br />In-Place Generators <br /> <br />llie three aircraft will be equipped with <br />wing lIDunted silver iodide generators. These will be the 12-position <br />wrotechnic flare racks or the Carley type acetone burner. The acetone <br />generators have a dispensing rate of 3 to 5 grams of silver iodide per <br />minute. Pyrotechnic flares will be the 100 gram - 3 minute burn tirre. <br />
