Because the nature of the seeding is to study dispersion of the

seeding materials and to collect microphysical data within the cloud

and on -the surface, as opposed to increasing precipitation, seeding

will be keyed to the research studies rather than to optimal times

for affecting precipitati0n. Operations will b"~ni.l1aYduring the

most intense storm periods.

7. Generator Operations and Control

Each day a CSU Research Meteorologist will assemble the weather

forecast data required to plan the research activities for the next

24 to 36 hours. Working with the licensed operator, a schedule of

seeding times and application rates will be established.

\;hen the research plans for the day, have been finalized, the

researchers will initiate calls to either the ground generator eare-

-taker or to the seeding aircraft pilot, to announce seed ffstart" and

"end" times, and seeding material release rate.

When seeding is in progress the licensed operator will maintain

contact with the ground generator caretaker by telephone or by radio

with the seeding aircraft pilot to coordinate any changes to the

initial seeding instructions.

The research coordinator will monitor the weather patterns,

severe weather bulletins issued by the National Weather Service and

avalanche warnings issued by the Avalanche Warning Center to detect

conditions which would necessitate seeding suspension.

The ground generator caretakers will maintain a log of actual

generator turn and turn off times, solution flow rate. and general
