Twin engine aircraft will be used to burn silver iodide

flares on selected days, Host releases will be under conditions of

minimal cloud cover.
,

5. Seeding Devices and Rates

Ground-based seeding will be conducted from one of the two

locations shown on the project map (Attachment II). Standard

"Skyfire" type generators will be used to burn Z% silver iodide -

Ammonium Iodate solution in acetone. The solution will burn in a

propane flame at rates which are adjustable from .10 gal/hour to

.5 gal/hour. At these flow rates, 7 grams to 36 grams of silver

iodide can be vaporized into ice nuclei for each hour of operation.

The ice nuclei yield effective at _zooe is approximately 1015 active
-~ ~-~- ----~ ---

nuclei per gram. On most operational days, CSU will burn simultane-

ously ~lndium Nitra~solution in ethyl alcohol, The product of

this combustion is Indium oxide, InZ03, a non-nucleating trace~

material. No weather modification effects can be expected from tracers.

Aircraft seeding will be accomplished dropping end-burning pyro-

technic flares. The flares will apply ice nuclei at a rate of approxi-

mately 185 grams per hour.' The flares will be dropped in various
-

patterns for transport and dispersion studies of aircraft released

seeding materials.

6. Operational Period and Seed Times

The research period will extend from November 15 until December

31, 1979. Should there be substantial below normal cloud conditions

during the p~riod, portions of the research will be extended into

January 1980. It is anticipated that [15-Z0 da~ suitable for the
