. .

.

.

.

COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
823 State Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203

January 6-7, 1983

Hyannis Peak Reservoir
(Meyering Livestock Co.)

Introduction

The proposed Hyannis Peak Reservoir would be located near the
headwaters of the Middle Fork of Arapahoe Creek, approximately 25
miles south of Walden. The dam would be about 80 feet high with
a crest length of about 350 feet. The storage capacity of the
reservoir would be just over 2,000 acre-feet. The reservoir
would lie entirely within the Routt National Forest.

Problem
--

The Meyering Livestock Company suffers late season water
shortages for . hay production. This problem can be alleviated by
the construction of the subject reservoir. The reservoir would
provide supplemental irrigation water to 5,300 acres of land
owned or leased by the company.

Project Study

The Meyering Livestock Company submitted an application in
March, 1980. The ewCB staff subsequently met with the owner and
his consulting engineer on several occasions to discuss the pro-
ject. One such meeting was at the proposed project site. At the
December, 1981, meeting the CWCB authorized matching funds for a
feasibility study on the project. That study has been completed
by Rocky Mountain Consultants, Inc., and is the basis for recom-
mendations on this project.

proposed Project

The Hyannis peak Reservoir would be created by the construc-
tion of a rock fill dam with a maximum height of 80 feet above
streambed, a crest length of 340 feet, and a crest width of 10
feet. The outlet works would be a gated, 30-inch reinforced
concrete pipe. The emergency spillway would be through an
adjacent saddle. The total estimated cost of the project is
$850,000.

The sponsor has a conditional storage decree in the amount
of 2,122.7 acre-feet which was adjudicated in February, 1972,
with a priority date of September 16, 1963. The Division
Engineer advises that storage in the reservoir would occur under
the terms of the U. S. Supreme Court decree in all but the very
driest years.

600
Hyannis/Res
