.

COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
823 State Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203

January 6-7, 1983

Hertha Reservoir Enlargement project
(Handy Ditch Irrigation Co.)

Introduction

Hertha Reservoir is owned by the Handy Ditch Irrigation
Company. It is located 5 miles northwest of Berthoud. There
are 197 stockholders in the ditch company. 10,000 acres of
farmland are benefitted by the irrigation water which the
company supplies.

Problem

.

The existing Hertha Reservoir has insufficient capacity
for the ditch company to utilize its full quota of
COlorado-Big Thompson (CBT) water, which is administered by
the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District (NCWCD).
The NCWCD advises that during the past 26 years the ditch
company has either had to transfer or cancel an average of
900 acre-feet of its CBT water quota per year.

Project Study

In September, 1982, the ditch company submitted an
application to the eweB. Subsequently, a feasibility study
was submitted which had been prepared by the Soil Conserva-
tion Service. That study is the basis of recommendations on
this project.

Proposed project

The Hertha Reservoir Enlargement is the last uncon-
structed unit of the Home Supply Watershed Project which was
authorized and funded under authority of the Watershed
Protection and Flood Prevention Act (Public Law 566), as
amended. The enlargement will increase the storage capacity
of the reservoir from 986 acre-feet to 1607 acre-feet.

.

Project features include raising the embankment of the
dam 10 feet, replacing the outlet structure with a 30 inch
reinforced concrete pipe and riser, constructing a concrete
emergency spillway, and constructing a concrete control
structure in the inlet canal. The estimated cost of the
project is $650,000.

400
f
