Also, rock
garden areas with perennial and annual forbs should be postponed
un I ess a I arge amount of labor is present to install these the
first year.

Tree and Shrub Plantings

Tree and shrub plantings should normally done early in the
spring, preferably before bare root stock or transplants have
broken dormancy. Container stock can be planted a I ittle later.
Si nce it takes grass one year to estab Ii sh we II enough to be
competitive with weeds, trees should not be planted unti I the
spr i ng of 1993 at the ear I i est.

With drip irrigation systems, plantings can be planted directly
into established grasses. Careful mowing close to the trees at
seedhead formation plus a I ittle carefully appl ied Roundup
herbicide at the base of the trees/shrubs is al I the maintenance
that would be required.

The use of a polypropylene blanket is also recommended for the
estab I i shment of the tree rows to the north and west of the
school property.

Juniper and caragana along the bus driveway would be shorter
trees, allowing more visibi I ity. Taller ponderosa pine and choke
cherry wi II be excellent along the north. Choke cherry and
Caragana along the west side should be attractive and colorful.
Neither will get tall (not over 15 ft.>, but adequate space does
not exist for a taller, long I ived species, unless poplar trees
were planted with the shrubs for height and a visibil ity barrier.

4
