Board

Brief of project

Discussion concerning an outdoor learning lab on the Bayfield,
Colorado School grounds began in earnest in February of 1991. At
this time Bert Roberts, Grounds Maintenance specialist for the
school district, wanted to have the students and others, learn
more about "where they live". Bert's desire to have people
understand that ultimately our environment shapes us rather than,
as we often think, we shape our environment, led to this effort.

Bert secured the support and assistance for this project from the'
school principal, teachers, San Juan Resource Conservation and
Development, Natural Resources Conservation service, united
States Forest Service, and others to help design an outdoor
learning lab depicting the three life zones that occur in the San
Juan Basin. With water playing such a major role in how we
develop our resources and carry out our lifestyles, Bert also
wanted to incorporate the importance of water and its efficient
use into the outdoor lab.

An application to the Colorado Water Conservation Board was made
in January 1992 for funding to assist in constructing the outdoor
learning lab. This application was partially funded and the
project scaled to match the funding and resources available,.

Installation of an underground drip irrigation system was begun
in June of 1993, followed that summer by the construction of a
barrier free trail. Plantings of various tree and shrub species
depicting the types of plants growing in the various life zones
in southwestern Colorado were made during the spring of 1994.
Many of these plantings were made by the classroom teachers and
several fourth and fifth grade classes.

Plant identification markers, bird houses, a sign for the
entrance to the trail, and brochures quickly followed. A formal
dedication ceremony was held at the end of the 1994-95 school
year during a school assembly officially designating the outdoor
lab as established.

/lome, School, (l/l(!
