Commercial and Industrial Customers

Although commercial and industrial customers account for only 18% of our service
area's water use, designing conservation programs for these customers is much more
complicated than designing Comm'"'''I',d,,''''' W""Use
programs for residential _.
customers. Residential water use ~~:" N
is fairly generic, while commercial
and industrial use, as seen in this
pie chart, is much more varied.
Aside from domestic use (toilets
and faucets), the most
homogeneous water uses among
commercial/industrial customers
are outdoor irrigation and
cooling/heating. Like residential
customers, commercial/industrial
customers irrigate more than
necessary, so we have designed programs to promote irrigation efficiency and increase
the amount of Xeriscape in business parks and other areas with significant landscaping.
We are also looking at more efficient heating/cooling, although cost and current
technological limitations present challenges.

OaoIlng&Holllng
_.

p.,ce..u....
,~

The remaining areas of water use, and the potential for savings, vary so widely from
site to site that it is impossible to design generic conservation programs. Instead we
have adapted the innovative approach of offering incentives to businesses who identify
and implement water-savings practices. We also plan to implement a program to
review plans and offer suggestions for new commercial/industrial sites prior to
construction.

Goals By 2045:
· to promote the implementation of water-efficient practices and technologies among
new and existing commercial and industrial customers, saving 626 acre-feet~n
--- water annually -- - ---
. to reduce irrigation inefficiencies by 50%, saving 888 acre-feet of water annually
· to have 10% of commercial/industrial landscape areas converted to Xeriscape,
saving 172 acre-feet of water annually.

Strategies:
· to offer market incentives to encourage water-saving practices
· to provide information on the most current water-savings technologies
· to have alternative programs ready in case incentives and information don't achieve
the desired results

7
