Multi-farnily Residential Customers

Multi-family customers account for 14% of the water used in our service area. Like
single family custorners, the M"It;-"mlly w.t., u..
biggest portion of multi-
family indoor use comes
from toilets, showers and/or
baths, and faucets - so-
called "domestic uses". As in
the single family sector, no
conservation programs are
planned for these because
we expect inefficient
plumbing fixtures will be
replaced naturally over time.
Because of improvements in
technology and projected "'~.,_
changes in federal =
standards, we expect clothes and dishwashers will also become more efficient over
time. However, since these standards are not currently in place, we are planning to do
some initial promotion of water-efficient appliances.

Ttil'ls
""

Codl~g & """,ling
"

Irrigation of landscape constitutes a smaller percentage of total water use for multi-
family customers that it does for single family customers, probably because many
apartment and condominium buildings have little landscaped area. However,
preliminary studies by Denver Water indicate that multi-family customers with
landscape tend to over-water even more than single family customers. We believe this
is the area offering the largest potential for water savings.

Goals By 2045:
. to promote replacement of clothes and dishwashers with more water-efficient
models, saving 3,522 acre-feet of water annually
. to reduce irrigation inefficiencies by 10%, saving 1,567 acre-feet _of water annu~~
. to increase the amount of multi-family residential accounts with Xeriscape within our
service area to 10%, saving 472 acre-feet of water annually.

Strategies:
. provide more information and incentives to stimulate the market for water-efficient
appliances
. offer incentives to reduce over-watering of landscapes
. provide more information on the benefits of Xeriscape and technical assistance in
converting existing landscapes to Xeriscape.

6
