.

.

.

. Check your irrigation system on a regular basis to ensure top performance. Routinely
check the coverage of sprinkler heads and adjust them if they are creating runoff on
walks and driveways. Before the first freeze, be sure to drain and clear the system of
water to avoid leaks and breaks. Be sure the batteries (if any) are fresh and the clock
will keep on time.
. Spending less time watering your yard actually produces a healthier yard. What?!
Yes, its true, if you have good soil. One good long soak of20 minutes once every 3
days is worth many light sprinkles. This enables the grass to establish a deeper root
system so it can soak up water from the deeper soil. However, if you have clay soils,
shorter repeated waterings are better since water can't soak into the clay as well.
. To determine if your lawn is getting enough water, try this test. Stick a screwdriver in
the ground. If it goes in too easily, cut back on your watering. If it' s a struggle to get
it in, increase your watering.
. The best time to water your yard is between the hours of 10pm and Sam. This reduces
evaporation loss by IS to 20 percent. The next best time to water is between S-7am
or 8-IOpm. Always avoid watering during the heat of the day, from Ilam-6pm.
. Set the blade height on your lawn mower so that you keep the grass at a height of3
inches. This shades the soil and prevents both excess drying and evaporation.

Additional Actions:
. When watering your lawn, make sure you are not also watering the pavement. After
. all, the sidewalk won't grow! Also, keep the spray angle as low as possible. Water
sprayed into the air is more subject to wind disturbance, which can waste water.
. Turn your sprinkler system off during rainy periods.
. Aerate your lawn 2-3 times per year, especially if you have clay soils.. Clay ~oil tends
to become compacted, which prevents water from sinking into the ground. Aeration
breaks up the soil and allows water to penetrate more easily.
. Washing your car? Use a bucket and hose to rinse instead ofleaving the hose run.
You can save 100's of gallons of water this way in just one washing.

Well, that about does it for this water audit. If you completed all the activities, give
yourself a pat on the back. You just potentially saved yourself thousands of gallons of
water and hundreds of dollars! Pass this audit onto your neighbor, and help them
conserve water too.

If you'd like to know more about Westminster water or other money-saving, water-
conserving activities, request the Westminster Water Department Water Conservation
brochure, call the Westminster Water Department at 303-430-2400, extension 2030 or call
the Boulder Energy Conservation Center at 303-441-3278. Good job today!

5
