True of turfgrass
Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, or a Kentucky bluegrass/tall fescue mixture is acceptable.

Water use
Your water use, whether indoor or outdoor, will not be restricted in any way with this research study.
We will be providing you with information on efficient lawn watering, but you will be given free rein
as to your decisions on when and how much to water.

Documentation
It will be necessary for participants to provide the Water Utility with copies of receipts that document
the following: .
I. Soil preparation: (a) name of contractor (or homeowner) performing the work, (b) date(s) of work,
and (c) cultivation methodes) used.

2. Soil amendment (Group 2 only): (a) name of supplier, (b) product description, (c) amount of
product, and (d) size of landscaped area receiving the amendment.

3. Turf: (a) name of contractor (or homeowner) performing the work, (b) date of sodding or seeding,
and (c) type of grass.

Additional Information Needed

Since the metering of participants is limited to total water use, we need to indirectly calculate your
landscape water use by subtracting your indoor water use (as determined by average monthly winter use)
from the total use during the watering season. To make this calculation as accurate as possible, we will
need to obtain the following information from you for the 12/1193 to 11/1194 water use monitoring
period:

1. Significant deviations from the typical number of residents. We will need to know the weeks in
which fewer or more people lived in the home as a result of the family leaving for vacation, a child
being home from college, having extended visitors, etc.

2. Differences in time spent in the home between winter and summer, such as if someone became
employed that had been at home, or vice versa.

We will provide you with a form in November to make it easier for you to record this information. We
estimate that it will take you no more than a total of one hour to furnish this information. '

Additionally, there will be a few occasions during the study period when a researcher will gather the
following information from your yard:

1. Type of irrigation system.

2. Irrigated area: total, turfgrass, planting beds, and vegetable garden.

3. Rating of landscape water requirements, based upon type of plant material.

4. Type of turfgrass.

3
