Based on a 50150 ratio of men and women for employees, a weighted average of 3.0 gallons
per flush for toilet/urinal has been used to estimate domestic water use. It is assumed that
half of the visitors to the building make one restroom visit. The same ratio for men and
women is assumed for visitors. The following estimates for domestic water use have been
calculated.

* employee toilet 560 people x 3 uselda x 3.0 gal/use x 260 dalyr = 1,31O,400gal.
* employ lav sink 560 people x 1 minlda x 2.5 gpm x 260 dalyr = 364,000 gal.

* visitor toilet
* visitor lav sink

100 people x 1 usel2 people x 3.0 galIuse x 260 dalyr = 39,000 gal.
100 people x 1/2 use x .25 minluse x 2.5 gpm x 260 dalyr = 8,125 gal.

Annual water use for domestic pUIposes is estimated at approximately 1,721,500 gallons.

Kitchen Use - A cafeteria is located in the Social Services Building that serves breakfast and
lunch five days per week. According to kitchen personnel, 75 to 85 meals per day are
served . at this facility. In addition to meal preparation, water is used for dishwashing,
garbage disposal and for icemaking.

Water use for the cafeteria is estimated to be 38,400 gallons per year, based on a 2 gallon
per meal water use. This figure includes meal prep, dishwashing, cleaning and sanitation.

Washinl! & Sanitation - Washing and sanitation water use includes general janitorial clean-
up. This clean-up nonnally occurs during the evening on nonnal working days, or
approximately 260 days per year. Assuming 20 gallons per floor, with ten floors, annual
water use for this purpose. is approximately 52,000 gallons per year.

Landscape Irrigation - Water is used to irrigate small turf aIid shrub areas at this facility.
There is about 140 square feet of turf area and 1000 square feet of shrub beds. There is
an automatic sprinkler system that is in operation from April through October. Watering
occurs during the early morning hours, three days per week.

Kentucky Bluegrass requires about 30 inches of supplemental irrigation in the Denver area.
Shrub beds require approximately half that amount. Since no infonnation is available to
the contrary, it is assumed that the landscape is irrigated efficiently at this site. Estimated
annual irrigation water use is 16,000 gallons.

Summary - Figure 2 summarizes the water balance estimates. Water use calculations were
based on observations, measurements and discussions with personnel familiar with water
uses. Total water use is the average metered water consumption for 1990, 1991 and 1992.
Approximately 116,000 gallons was not accounted for in this report. This represents
approximately 6% of average annual water use for 1990, 1991 and 1992. This discrepancy
is probably due to the subjective estimates made during the analysis of water usage and
reflects the use of conservative assumptions.

3.
