WATER USE AUDIT
STATE CAPITOL COMPLEX
CENTENNIAL BUILDING

INTRODUCTION

The Centennial Building, located at 1313 Sherman Street, is part of the State Capitol Annex,
a group of buildings that house support activities for Colorado State Government. This
audit investigates water use at this facility, and will discuss the ways that water is used at the
Centennial building and where potential savings might be achieved. The Colorado State
Personnel Office, Department of Local Mfairs, Department of Natural Resources and State
Archives are housed in this building. The Centennial Building also serves as State Training
facility.

Eddie Hernandez and Jim Reed of Denver Water visited this facility on June 1, 1992 to
obtain information regarding water use. Chris Bridges from the Colorado Office of Water
Conservation, Richard Lebsock, Art Thayer and Glen Close provided much of the
information about water use practices.

EXISTING WATER CONSUMPTION

The Centennial Building receives its water supply from Denver Water. It is supplied by a
single tap and meter which is read monthly. Water consumption data for 1989, 1990 and
1991 is listed in Table 1 and presented graphically on Figure 1.

TABLE 1
Waler Use (1000 gal.)

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec TOT
1989 131 112 I48 180 177 232 6I 34S 283 276 373 3S8 2676
1990 327 287 259 192 216 255 307 280 291 391 226 204 3135
1991 2I6 206 2I2 223 262 226 3I5 279 274 299 195 243 2707

WATER USES

The Centennial Building is the largest building in the State Capitol Complex. This eight
story facility was built in 1976, and serves as offices for several state functions.
Approximately 750 employees work in the building. Restroom facilities are located on each
floor. There are also three basement levels located in the structure, which house a
microfilm vault, other storage sites and mechanical equipment rooms. There are a total of
