.

.

6. INNOVATIVE FEATURES/ANTICIPATED BENEATS:
The public education campaign will present the many water savings
techniques and develop materials which will be especially important for
other areas in Colorado which are like Woodmoor and the Tri-Lakes region.
Our residential character, foothill climate, and wooded and prairie
environment is like many communities on both the west and east slope of the
Colorado Rockies. The brochures and folders will be easily useable by other
Colorado communities that are similar. In addition, the presentations and
workshops that will be developed will also be of use to these other
communities.
The development of a curriculum that is dispursed throughout three
years of school is especially original. Most school curriculums do not
include water conservation as a part of their curriculum and when this
topic is included it is presented in a single block which may last one day
to a week. When included it is treated in a cursuary fashion and in a
lecture format. The proposed curriculum will be integrated into the primary
topic that is being taught and will thereby become more real and related to
each of the children's activities. Children learn when they participate,
are active. and have fun. The planned curriculum will include all of these
by the use of hands-on field investigations, visits to water treatment and
waste water facilities, the collection and analysis of data through the use
of computers, and a long-term approach over several years of the student's
education.
As has been stated previously, the Lewis Palmer School District is
presently in the process of building a new Middle School where the students
will have the opportunity to learn at a modern facility and the teachers
will be team teaching and integrating the various academic subjects. Yater
conservation will play an important part in the integration of the
developed curriculum; not only in science, as would normally be the case,
but by being integrated into math, writting. geography, and history.

7. AGENaES & PARllaPANTS:
There are several groups and individuals who will be involved in the
program:
Woodmoor Yater and Sanitation District:
Phil Steininger - District Manager
District Board Members
District 38:
Dallas Strawn - Superintendent
Ted Baughman - Academic Vice-President
James Connally - Middle School Science Department Head
Samuel Morgan - Middle School Science Teacher
Tribune:
Leona Latroy
KKTV - Channel 11 NEWS:
Jan Porter
Universitv of Colorado at Colorado Springs
Paul K. Grogger

8. llME TO COMPLEllON:
The public education part of the program will start designing
materials, presentations, and workshops as soon as the grant is awarded.
The initial approach will concentrate on outside water use and will be used
as quickly as possible to implement conservation techniques before the
