In order to use water efficiently, Fountain encourages the use of landscape
plants that require little additional irrigation. For all multi-family, commercial,
and industrial developments landscape plants must be from the
Recommended Plant List of the City of Fountain in accordance with City
Code Title 17 Section 17.14. This list, found in Appendix A of this report,
contains a selection of plant materials that are based upon water restrictions
and the climate of the Fountain/Colorado Springs area. The list of low-water
requiring landscape plants is available at the City of Fountain Utility Office
116 South Main Street. These requirements apply to new construction as
well as certain major building renovations. As older buildings are replaced or
renovated over the years, additional water savings will be achieved.
Although the use of low water requiring plants is not mandatory for single
family dwellings by City code, the City still encourages its such use. By
changing the type of plants used in landscaping, Fountain can eventually
realize substantial water savings over typical landscape scenarios. The City
strongly encourages all citizens in single-family dwellings to implement use
of these water-saving standards.

To promote water conservation, Fountain also encourages the use of fine-
bladed, turf type, tall fescue, fine fescue, or other similar type of turfgrass
for general and lawn use. By using the turfgrasses mentioned above, the
irrigation requirement for the lawn will be reduced. Both the tall and fine
fescues are more drought resistant than Kentucky bluegrass cultivars.
Monitoring and Evaluation
To ensure the proper information is being disseminated to the general public,
the Planning Department will on review annually and update as necessary
the Recommended Plant List of the City of Fountain.

III. Water-efficient industrial and commercial processes
As of 2001, industrial and commercial water usage does not constitute a
large portion of Fountain's total water consumption. However, the City has
taken an aggressive approach in maximizing the efficient use of limited
water resources for both commercial and industrial purposes.
