Thornton's Existing Water Conservation Program

The City has been actively involved in water conservation for many years. Repairs are made as needed. All
incoming water is measured at the treatment plants. The annual total of water entering
the plants is compared with the total delivered to customers. The difference between
these two measurements, minus all unmetered uses is considered unaccounted for water.
Unmetered uses include water system flushing, fire fighting, sewer flushing, street
sweeping, and treatment plant fiher backwash. Historical data for Thornton indicate a
modest amount of unaccounted water. The average annual unaccounted for water during
the years 1989 to 1995 is only 3%3 ofthe total water produced at the treatment plants.
American Water Works Association standards consider less than 100/0 loss as superior
.. __ _ _perf~!~ct:.___ __ _m _ ___ ___ ____._ __ _ _. _ __ _ m _ _ _ _ u__ ___ __'_ ___

Unaccounted for Water

Year Unaccounted for Water
1991 0%
1992 1%
1993 4%
1994 7%
1995 5%
Source: Water and Wastewater Svstems Master Plan.
