<br />eurrentas of: April 21, 1997 <br /> <br />Section 1 - Background. <br /> <br />The City of Alamosa provides water and sewer service within the approximately 2,300 acres of <br />the City as well as operating and maintaining the sewer and water systems for the East Alamosa <br />Sewer and Water District under contract to the District. The City provides water to about 2,400 <br />taps within the City and another 26 taps outside the City limits but served by City lines. The City <br />is experiencing residential growth of about 1. 5%/year with major demand increases expected to <br />result in parks expansion and construction of a new high school. <br /> <br />Water within the City is provided by deep artesian wells in the confined aquifer and is not treated. <br />Fluoride is added to one of the wells and the City has a disinfectant waiver so that the system does <br />not have to be chlorinated, The system makes no use of surface water. <br /> <br />Water use efficiency is an important component of the City's water supply planning. Reduced <br />water demand shall decrease the amount of future water supply and distribution facility <br />development. These facility demand reductions may save the City millions of dollars in future <br />capital costs. The City can particularly benefit by reducing peak demand which is constrained by <br />current water decree pumping limits and which shall maximize the capacity of existing facilities <br />and reduces pumping costs.
