.

.

.

water is needed due to extended drought, this can be done on an
infrequent basis with surface sprinklers. A heavy watering
schedule was implemented the first summer after planting to try
to give the plants a needed boost.

During the 1994-95 school year there were several classroom
activities designed and carried out by the teachers to begin
utilizing the outdoor "lab" as a learning and teaching tool.
Also, one teacher directed the construction of signs, plant
identification labels, and a couple of bird houses that would be
placed along the trail upon completion of the projects.

During this process there was the normal waxing and waning of
interest and enthusiasm for the project. Bert Roberts, project
manager for the project, kept the ball rolling with the school
administration, teachers, students, and paperwork, all while
carrying out his normal duties as Grounds Specialist.

At the end of the 1994-95 school year a dedication ceremony was
held at the project site with students and faculty in attendance.
The school principal spoke on the importance of understanding our
environment and the role the outdoor "lab" can and will play in
helping the school and community learn, as Bert Roberts said
initially, that "our environment ultimately shapes us rather
than, as we often think, we shape our environment."

At the conclusion of the dedication a ceremonial tree was planted
by the students in memory of those killed in the bombing of the
federal building in Oklahoma city, Oklahoma.
