XERISCAPE, W ATERWISE LANDSCAPING

Promote quality water-effi<.:ient landscaping designed to reduce the costs of irrigation water and
maintenance.

BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Xeriscape is defined as creative landscaping that conserves water and protects the environment.
It is based on seven principles: planning and design, soil analysis and improvement, practical
turf areas, appropriate plant selection, efficient irrigation, mulching, and maintenance.

1. Demonstration XerisC3pe garden

Status: The City maintains a demonstration Xeriscape garden at Sunset Park, Sunset and
Longs Peak A venue, displaying 80 different plants, trees and shrubs. All plants are
labeled, and plant lists are available at the garden.

Implementation: On-going.

2 Providf~ Xeriscape information and brochures to the public

Status: Xeriscape information is available from the Water Utility, Parks Division and
at infonnation centers at the Civic Center. Xeriscape Colorado's bi-monthly newsletter,
WaterWise is distributed at the public library and local garden centers.

Implementation: On-going.

3. Sponsor Xeriscape seminars

Status: Occasionally provided by other organizations.

Implementation: Sponsor Xeriscape seminars beginning in 1996.

4. Incentive Procram

Status: No direct incentives to Xeriscape are recommended. Savings in water bills and
maintenance cosl~ provide an incentive to Xeriscape.

Implementation: Develop program to promote Xeriscape in the community:
. Find sponsor for an annual Longmont Xeriscape landscape contest and awards.
. Booth or display at local home and garden show.
. Information packet for home builders, realtors, and new utility customers.
