.

F. Water and Surface Topography.

1. Students were taught a comprehensive course on maps

and how to read them. The contour training kits were used

for the students to draw a simple contour map. Next the

students were taken into the field for an orienteering

exercise.

2 . The entire sixth grade (about 300 students) was
taken to the Fox Run Regional Park for an orienteering
. exercise. Sixteen markers were placed around the park and

their location was marked on an orienteering map of the

park. Each student had to navigate through the park using

the map and to punch the map with the markers found at the

marked locations. This exercise reinforced the

understanding of topography on the water cycle.

3. From this exercise as well as the class work the

students learned about contour maps, how to read the

contours and the impact of contours on the flow of water.

.

17
