.

1. Water samples were brought in by students from the

communities within the LPMS district as well as private

wells. This water was then tested for various pollutants.

The students participated in the process of testing water

and gained an appreciation for clean water.

.

2. Surface water samples were taken from streams and

ponds around the school and this water was also tested.

Additionally, students were able to observe the ecology of

pond water and were led to an understanding of balance in an

ecological system.

3. A major aspect of water purity is pH. Extensive

classes were taught on the aspects of pH. Surface water pH

measurements were made in the waters around the school.

.

Classroom measurements of pH were made with the Personal

Science Laboratory (PSL) equipment, color indicators, and

the electronic pH meter. Demonstrations of the caustic

nature of strong acids and bases were presented and extended

to include the damage to the environment by slight pH

changes in surface water..

16
