I
I
I
\
I
I

I
I
I
------ --

I

of the payback cost at this time. The reduced supply of water the City now has gives an
incentive for water conservation, whereas with the larger quantity the City would have
had to promote extra usage for paying the annual debt service.

The water budget for 1995 was about $1 million including curr t debt service.
Wrth the full Dolores Project water obligation, the budget in 1997 would have had to
increase to $1.5 million with all the increases for debt service.

In addition to the residents of Cortez, the City treats water for the Ute Mountain
Ute Tribe and Montezuma Water District No.1. After renovations to the clarifier and
flocculator basins, the City's water treatment plant is rated for a capacity of 8 million
gallons per day (mgd). The summer rate is between 5 and 6 mgd with rare peaks up to
7 mgd. The plant was constructed in 1960 and has had numerous updates. A controls
and media upgrade is planned for the winter of 1996.97 to replace older controls that
have wom out. The City is considering a possible new plant in 2001 or later, depending
on the condition of the existing plant.

4
