DEERE & AULT
CONSULTANTS.INC.
April 16, 2013
Mr. Travis Smith
San Luis Valley Irrigation District
P.O. Box 637
269 Miles Street
Center, Colorado 81125
Re: Phase 1 Construction Costs 2013; D&A Job No. CG-0387.001.00
Dear Mr. Smith:
This letter summarizes costs to complete the work for Phase 1 Rehabilitation. The work to be
performed under this contract is described in the plans and specifications submitted to the State
Engineer's Office (SEO)by Deere &Ault Consultants on January 31, 2013. The primary work
items are a clay slope liner on the left abutment,a grout curtain on the right abutment, and clay
blankets on both abutments. The unit price bid for this work is itemized on Table 1. MCMS,
Inc. is the selected general contractor. He is subcontracting the grouting to Hayward Baker, a
specialty grouting subcontractor. The base bid price is $1,759,016.25, and includes a
performance bond for this work.
The total estimated costs for 2013 are summarized on Table 2, and include other expected costs
described below:
• Additional Possible Grouting Costs, $395,000: It is very difficult to estimate grouting
quantities, that is number of holes and volume of cement needed in order to construct a
tight curtain. The base bid includes costs for primary holes plus one row of secondary
holes, both assuming moderately high grout takes. It may be necessary to add more
secondary holes and even tertiary holes. We have thus estimated additional possible
costs of$182,500 for secondary holes and $182,500 for tertiary holes. We also included
$30,000 for void filling of the left abutment liner foundation. This additional work, if
required, will be performed at the unit rates in the base bid.
• Construction Engineering, $220,000: The scope and costs are described in our letter of
March 14, 2013 to Travis Smith.
• Install Inclinometers, $40,000: The two existing inclinometers are plugged. The SEO, in
their review of our plans, requested we install a new one in order to monitor slope
stability of the left abutment. Last years' drilling was not able to get deep enough using
ODEX and casing advancer methods on the landslide. We have therefore received a base
drilling bid of$32,000 from Layne Western to utilize a Becker rig. We have estimated a
budget number of$40,000 to address any drilling problems or delays.
600 S.Airport Road,Building A,Suite 205
Longmont,CO 80503
Phone: 303-651-1468• Fax 303-651-1469
