Detention Basin
A detention basin was constructed near the intake structure to assist with storing storm
runoff as well receiving pumping plant drain water. For storm water runoff events, when
the detention pond overflows, no permit is required. In the event maintenance work
renders the detention basin full, continuing the maintenance activity would require
pumping from the intake structure directly into the Animas River, and a 402 permit will be
required.
TRANSFER ISSUE
STIPULATION
Permits required to pump
Reclamation will establish the method and procedure to obtain
from the intake forebay
required permits.
directly to the Animas River
Background. When used to drain the pumping plant and intake structure, the detention
pond would fill and make it necessary to either; pump water directly into the Animas
River, or cease maintenance operations until the detention pond water could percolate
into the ground.
C. Pumping Plant
1. Pumping Plant and Appurtenances
For the purpose of this transfer inspection report, the Pumping Plant starts at the beginning
of the Suction Manifold and continues to start of RBIC and the start of the City of Durango's
water supply line and includes: all circuit breakers, disconnect fuses, surge arresters,
transformers, control cabinets, service elevator, overhead cranes, air compressor water
systems, HVAC system, suction manifold, pumps and motors, valves, and discharge
manifold, air chambers, and flow meters necessary to operate the pumping plant.
There are eight horizontal centrifugal pumping units of three different sizes. Units 1 and 2
are rated 14 cfs each, Units 3 and 4 are rated 28 cfs each, and Units 5 through 8 are rated 56
cfs each. The total rated capacity of Durango Pumping Plant is 280 cfs. Units 1 and 2 have a
rated head of 517 feet and Units 3 through 8 have a rated head of 552 feet
A below - ground 39' diameter spherical air chamber is located approximately 50 feet south
of the pumping plant. This chamber provides surge protection for the Ridges Basin Inlet
Conduit. The air chamber has been enclosed within a reinforced concrete structure with a
pre- manufactured metal dome roof to insure that the water inside the air chamber will not
freeze during winter operations.
Transferred Works Inspection 15 Animas -La Plata Project
