-19-
and partial slope protection as discussed for Option A -2. A new outlet work will be
required for Dam 1. Approximately 3.2 miles of county road would be relocated above
the flood pool and a new county bridge will be constructed over the inlet canal.
Option C -2: This option is similar to Option C -1 with the exception that a new dam will
be constructed downstream of existing Dam 2. The new dam will have adequate
foundation treatment consisting of slurry trench or cut and coverArench and upstream
slope protection along with new outlet works. The county':road and bridge construction
would be similar to that in Option C -1. This w 11 result in additional storage of 10,800
acre -feet.
Option C -3: This option is similar to Option C -2 with the exceptions that a new, single,
long embankment encompassing the area below Dams 1 A, 2 and 3 will be constructed
and Dam 1 will also be replaced with a new dam -downstream. As in the above option,
the work will consist of construction in the embankment with adequate foundation
treatment and slope protection. Approximately 5.5 miles of county road would be
relocated and a new bridge constructed over the inlet canal. This option will result in
additional storage of 21,900 acre - feet.
9.0 OPINION ON CONSTRUCTION COSTS
Construction cost estimates are based on estimated quantities - for major project features and
work items. Unit prices for construction items were estimated assuming that conventional
construction equipment and practices would be used. Unit prices were refined to reflect local
conditions and materials available at the site, or required to be imported. Mobilization, bonds
and 'insurance were estimated as 1.5% to 3.0% of the base construction cost. A contingency
item at 15% of the base construction cost for unscheduled work items was included in the
construction cost estimate, which is a catch ;hadditional ll categor for smaller and other work items not
specifically identified in the cost estimates. 1% construction contingency was
included to account for unanticipated site conditions, potential change orders, to reflect the
construction market at the time of the project bid, and other uncertainties in the cost
2 \repo its \97 -1 -500. nk
