67. Under present conditions, with the relocation of the Bear Creek
Canyon road incomplete, it is estimated that a future flood of the same
magnitude as that of 1939 would cause $263,000 damage as compared with
the $649,000 damage in 1939. A comparison of the estimated future damages
with those of the 1939 flood is shown in the following table.
COMPARISOIN OF DAM&G S
t ; : Future
Location : 1939 3 Total : Flood : Total
Bear Creek Canyon: i
Land : $ 5,000 : $ : $ 15,000 :
Buildings and improvements : 4,900 : i 20,000 ;
Roads and bridges ; 2+0,300 250,200 S 50,000 ; 95,000
Idledale: s
Lana : 13,000 : 5,000 :
Buildings and improvements 107,000: 120,000.: 10,000 15,000
•
Morrison: : t
Land ; 6,900 i : 10,000 S
Buildings and improvements 54,400 ; 4o,000
Utilities : 3,000 ; 5,000
Clean -up ; 60,000: 12+,300 : 60,000 ; 115,000
S s 3
Below Morrison: ! :
Land 14,500 : 15,000 ;
Roads and bridges 1,500 : 1,000 :
Miscellaneous 5,000 : 21,000 2,000 19,000
Ht. The loss of 44 lives along Bear Creek Canyon during past floods
has been reported. A notable fact is that none of these persons have been
local residents, approximately 50 percent having been campers and the remain-
der tourists. Upon the completion of the new highway through the canyon,
it may be assumed that the loss,of life among tourists traveling along
the highway will be somewhat reduced. During recent floods there has
been no loss of life among campers, but with the increased use of the area
there is the ever - present threat of this recurring.
69.
