63. Summary of damages.— Data concerning damages from floods prior
to 1933 are very meager, and have not been tabulated.
SM-11ARY OF FLOOD DA11AGES , BE -.E1 CREED BASKS
:Buildings and: Roads & :iscel -
-
Year Land :Improvements : Bridges : Idunicipal : laneous Total
s
1933 ; 9,700 : 29,900 : 4g,400 : 24,200 : = 111,200
1934: 7,300 : 17,100 a 64,loo : 500 : g ,000
1938 : 47,800 : 16g,400 : 353,900 : 3,000 : 75,000 : 648,000_
TOTALS: -63, goo : 215,400 : 466,3oo 27,700 ; 75,000 s 94g,200
This would indicate an average annual loss, for the 6-year period, 1933 to
1939, inclusive, amounting to ap;?roximately $141,000. In addition, 17 lives
have been lost in the same period.
0. DAATAGE FROM FUTU?.D FLOODS
64. General.— The topograph?T of the Bear Creek Basin is such that
its development has been necessaril7r limited to the narrow valleys along
the several streams. The encroachment on the streambeds of the highways,
railroad, and buildings in the resort centers have made them vulnerable to
flooding. The railroad line has been abandoned and the tracks removed
west of Fort Logan so that there is no possibility of damages to this item
during future floods.
65. Both State Highway !To. 93 and U. S. Highi,ray 'To. 6 and No. 40
have been relocated higher up the side of Mt. Vernon Creek Canyon so that
they are not in danger of future floods. State Highway ITo. 74 through Bear
Creek Canyon is at present being reconstructed, and it is believed will be
reasonably safe from all future flood hazards.
66. During the flood of 1939 a large pavilion and dance hall was
completely destroyed by fire and several other smaller buildings were
demolished by the floodwaters at Idledale. To date these buildings have
not been replaced. As the basin is primarily a recreation area, further
development of the resort centers is to be e:Tected. If, in the develop-
ment, a restriction is not placed upon buildings encroaching on the flood
plain of the stream, an increase in damage to this item will result.
»20 --
