SECTION II
DRAINAGE AREA
GENERAL
The specific drainage area designated for detail study lies west of
Greeley between 23rd Avenue and 35th Avenue and runs from 28th Street on the
south to the Cache La Poudre River on the north. However, proper evaluation
of a specific drainage area, requires a detailed analysis of all drainage
basins feeding into the specific area and a study of the channel or channels
Into which the run -off is discharged.
To accomplish the required drainage study, all contributing drainage
basins to the south and west of Greeley were thoroughly investigated. In
addition, the effect of this discharge into Greeley Ditch No. 3 and the
drainage channels leading to the Cache La Poudre River was studied. This
expanded drainage area extends from near 14th Avenue on the east to 51st
Avenue on the west, and from the Greeley Loveland Ditch near 28th Street on
the south, to the Cache La Poudre River on the north.
The natural slope of the land is northeast from a ridge south and west
of Greeley to the river on the north and east of the City. The Greeley -
Loveland Ditch and its lateral, the Grapevine Ditch, follow the ridge on the
south and west and form the upper boundary of the drainage basin. Across the
north end of the drainage basin, the Greeley No. 3 Ditch flows from west to
east closely paralleling the Cache La Poudre River. In addition to Greeley
Ditch No. 3, several streets, avenues, and ditch laterals intercept the
natural slope and act as boundaries for small drainage areas within the large
natural basins.
- 5 -
