West Cherry Creek Watershed Proje,t (PL 566, Douglas and El Paso Counties) <br />The project area is 31,360 acres and was sponsored by the Douglas <br />County Soil Conservation District and the Colorado State Soil <br />Conservation Board. It was completed in 1962 at a cost of $436,614 <br />including local costs of $72,458. Needed land treatment measures have <br />been applied on the 40 ranches in the watershed. Structural measures <br />included 10 flood prevention dams to protect highly productive valley <br />bottom lands used for crops and hay. <br />Coalbank Creek Watershed Project (PL 566, Weld County) - The project contains <br />24,000 acres and was sponsored by the West Greeley Soil Conservation <br />District, Weld County and the Colorado State Soil Conservation Board. <br />It was completed in the spring of 1963 at a cost of $370,171 ($236,939 <br />PL 566 and $133,232 other funds). Needed land treatment measures <br />have been installed by the 109 farmers in the watershed.. One flood <br />prevention dam and - two grade stabilization structures were built to <br />protect highly productive irrigated farmland, roads, and associated <br />property from flood damage. <br />Big Sandy Watershed Project (PL 566, Elbert and E1 Paso Counties) - The <br />project area is 219,000 acres. It is sponsored by the Big Sandy <br />Soil Conservation District, Colorado Game, Fish and Parks.Division, <br />and the Colorado State Soil Conservation Board. Construction is <br />complete at a total cost of $1,638,069 ($1,127,401 PL 566 and <br />$510,668 other funds). Needed land treatment measures have been <br />installed on the 156 farms and ranches in the watershed. Structural <br />works include 14 flood prevention dams, one of which ( Ramah) is a <br />multi- purpose structure which has 500 acre -feet of storage for fish <br />and wildlife - recreation purposes. The primary purpose of the project <br />is to protect valuable.bottom lands in floodplains used for crops and <br />hay from flood damage. The Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Division <br />has stocked the Ramah Reservoir with fish and the residents of this <br />area feel the project has high potential as an important recreational <br />area. <br />Fishers Peak - Carbon Arroyos Watershed'Project (PL 566, Las Animas County) <br />This project of 1,470 acres is located adjacent to the City of Trinidad <br />and includes a part of the City as well as private land. Construction <br />was completed in fiscal year 1964 and includes two retardation dams <br />and a diversion. Final cost was $280,481 .($264,886 PL 566 and $15,595 <br />other costs). Needed land treatment measures have been applied. <br />Sponsors were the Purgatoire Soil Conservation District, City of <br />Trinidad and the State Soil Conservation Board. <br />Limon Watershed Project (PL 566, Lincoln and Elbert Counties) - The High <br />Plains Soil Conservation District, Town of Limon and the State Soil <br />Conservation Board sponsored this project embracing 9,870 acres, <br />three floodwater retardation dams and land treatment on the land <br />area. Final cost $181,411 ($16.3,206 PL 566 and $18,205 local). <br />
