Colorado State Office <br />Soil Conservation Service <br />Denver, Colorado 80211 <br />November 1, 1972 <br />THE WATERSHED PROGRAM IN COLORADO: <br />. (Pilot and Public Lana 5661 <br />Applications. (Public Law 566 <br />Seventy -five applications for assistance under the Small Watershed Program <br />have been received by the State Soil Conservation Board. Four are dupli- <br />cations. Fifty -four of these applications have been forwarded to the Washington <br />office requesting planning authorization. Remaining applications are in various <br />stages of planning; have been tabled by the State Soil Conservation Board <br />representing the Governor of Colorado; have been suspended or terminated; are <br />undergoing preliminary investigation; and some have been evaluated as feasible <br />but local sponsors have not accepted proposal or would not assure land rights. <br />Six of the applications are in the preliminary investigation stage. <br />Of the 54 applications forwarded to the Washington office 28 have received <br />planning authorization. Fifteen of the 28 have received authorization for <br />operations. Construction has been completed on 12 of the 15. Project. <br />completion has been reported on 11 of the 12.. One has been suspended <br />awaiting land rights. Three are presently in the Work Plan development stage, <br />and ten have been suspended or terminated. <br />Pilot Project <br />In addition to the 15 projects authorized for operations under Public Law 566, <br />the previously authorized Kiowa Pilot Project was completed June 30, 1962. <br />Watershed Projects in Colorado with Installation Complete (Pilot and PL 566 <br />Kiowa Creek Pilot Watershed Project (Elbert and El Paso Counties) - This <br />project includes 75,560 acres and 62 floodwater - retarding dams. It <br />was completed June 30, 1961 at a total cost of $1,274,175 of which <br />.$284,953 was local contribution. A comprehensive project evaluation <br />program was completed during fiscal year 1967. <br />Wray Watershed Project (PL .566, Yuma County) - This project contains 2,390 <br />acres and was sponsored by the Hale Soil Conservation District and <br />the City of Wray. The purpose of the project, which was completed <br />in the spring of 1963 with the seeding of six retarding structures, <br />was to protect the agricultural floodplains and the City of Wray <br />from flood damage. The final project cost was $262,076 (22,182 <br />local). <br />
