S T R U C T U R A L E F F E C T S A N D F E A S I B I L I T Y
LAND TREA'T'MENT
The effects of land treatment measures will be primarily on -site
conservation benefits of land improvement and efficient water management.
STRUCTURAL MEASURES
Rehabilitation of the lateral system to assure water delivery and
reduce seepage losses the primary purpose of the pi-oject.
A total of about 11,640 acres presently being irrigated, and about
600 additional acres, would benefit by the works of improvement.
The lateral lining proposed will save an estimated 5,390 acre -feet
of water annually. This savings is the difference between the amount
of water the State Water Commissioner delivered to the Company and the
amount the Company delivered to the farms during the period from 1960
through 1970. This saving of water will reduce the amount of water that
would otherwise have to be pumped.
The 25 c.f.s. flume from Smith Reservoir. has served its life and
needs to be replaced. The Company has had high maintenance cost in
replacing the rotten timbers and have had to reduce its operating capacity
to 10 c.f.s. Several alternates for replacement wero calculated.
The least costly replacement is a 25 c.f.s. pumping plant and 7,000
feet of lined lateral. By installing an additional 4,000 lineal feet of
If) c.f.s. lined ditch, 300 acres being irrigated from the Lindley Lateral
could be irrigated from reservoir water. This would eliminate 10,51;0
feet of the Lindley Lateral which has an estimated seepage and evapor-
ation loss of 75 percent. An additional 600 acres could be irrigated
with reservoir water by adding another pump to the facility.
The proposed measures will reduce operation, maintenance, rind
replacement costs of the prosent irrigation facilities, reduce 3mo>i.111t
of water to be pumped, provide the opportunity for the operators to
increase their production through better water and soil management, and
provide storage water to 600 additional acres.
The annual cost for amortization of structural reasures for a
50 -year project life at 5 -3/8 percent interest rate and including
operation and maintenance is estimated to be $48,440. The total annual
benefits for the purposes included are estimated to be $116,260. The
resulting benefit -cast ratio is 2.4 to 1.0. See Table IV for a compar-
ison of benefits and costs.
