Town of Vail - Town Council - Town Council Highlights - Archive - June 12, 2001 Page 4 of 8
The Council agreed to help fund a $25,000 request by Joel Heath of the
Vail Valley Tourism and Convention Bureau to send a delegation to Spai
to present a host bid for the World Kayak Championships in 2003. The
bid, presented June 25 -July 1, will showcase Vail's new whitewater park
which debuted during Memorial Day Weekend with the Teva Whitewater
Festival. Councilmembers also agreed to provide funding to help fine -tu
the park by tightening the water over each of the three structures to crea
bigger features. The adjustments, estimated at $50,000, will require a
flood plain study and could be constructed this fall —all within the origina
construction budget of $300,000. If Vail is awarded the 2003 host bid, a
pre - worlds competition will be held in Vail in 2002. Health said the Vail
Valley Tourism and Convention Bureau would fund the 2002 event and
would ask for town funding assistance for the 2003 championships. In hi
presentation, Heath cited economic benefits of $71,750 in additional
lodging revenue for the 250 athletes and their supporters; early summer
media exposure; and international attention as some of many benefits V
would receive by hosting the world championships.
-- Request for July 4th Special Events Funding
Next, the Council heard a second request from Joel Heath and the Vail
Valley Tourism and Convention Bureau for $15,000 to augment the Vail
America Days Fourth of July celebration. Heath said the funding is need
to replace a 10- year -long presenting sponsorship held by Chevrolet. Th
$12,500 Chevy sponsorship has been discontinued, due to restructuring
Heath said the bureau has solicited sponsorships from 100 other
companies, but has had little interest due to lack of advertising visibility
the Front Range— something Chevrolet had not required. Without
additional sponsorship, Heath said the bureau would need to trim its
fireworks and entertainment budgets or absorb a $23,000 funding deficit
Noting the importance of the event, Councilmembers offered to split the
cost and would approach Vail Resorts for the other half.
/ 1 1.
-- Request for Funding from the Vail Valley Summer Rodeo Series
In reviewing a funding request to support the Vail Valley Summer Rodeo
Series at the Ranch at Berry Creek in Edwards, the Council approved a
suggestion offered by Diana Donovan to purchase full -price rodeo ticket
and a meal for 102 members of a California -based band who will march
the Vail America Days parade. The contribution will total $1,500.
a
-- Colorado Alliance for a Rapid Transit Solution (CARTS) Funding
Request
http: / /www.ei.vaii.co.us /town council /highlights /archive /2001 /010612.htm 01/30/2002
