69

processed and stomach content preserved. The contractor also found an
exceptionally large number, between 40-45, squawfish in the same river
section between Cataract Canyon and Lake Powell. These squawfish were
between 1 1/2 and 6 lb fish. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resource
personnel working in this same river section found a 6 inch squawfish.
Various stages of striped bass spawning fish were found in this study.
Ripe males, ripe females and spent spawners. It looks as if the stripers
are spawning somewhere between Gypsum',Canyon and the upper end of Cataract
Canyon. No stripers were observed above Cataract Canyon.
Colorado squawfish movement and spawning in this area of the Colorado
River could not be determined. We do not know at this time where this
large a number of subadult-adult squawfish could have come from or whether
they reside year-round in this river section.
Disease work - There is no report on this phase of work.
Field Investigations
Field investigations are divided into: (1).Systematic sampling;
(2) Special studies; (3) Radio tracking, and (4) Establishing Flagstaff
office.
