, • r
70
Systematic sampling - Field teams were organized and activities initiated
in late March and have continue satisfactorily, on schedule to mid June.
Most river strata were sampled prior to and during runoff periods.
Field conditions during runoff were very difficult and field crews were
only marginally effective in sampling the fish populations during the
high flows.
+ Special studies.- Field teams were effective in determining young-of-
the-year survival and monitoring their movement patterns. Efforts to
collect adult humpback chub in Black Rocks and bring them to ripeness
through hormonal injections were successful and resulted in the production
of some 17,000 viable eggs.
:Radio"Tracking - The radio tagging experiment was initiated in early
April and after some difficulty in capturing suitable size adults did
result in the tagging of six squawfish and one razorback sucker. The
first squawfish that was tagged and released exhibited symptoms of
distress after the third day in the wild and was recaptured. It was
i
administered several physiological and antibiotic treatments, but was
accidentally killed when rising waters collapsed the holding net on it.
The other fish have demonstrated remarkably good health and seemingly
normal behavior. The field crews have had exceptional success in main-
taining radio contact with them and a mass of data have been accumulated
on the diurnal movements and habitats selected by these fish. Some of
these fish have been followed into tributary stream and may provide
information as to the importance of various tributaries such as the
White, Yampa and Duchesne Rivers.
