68 <br /> <br />A series of specimens from each group of hybrids are being collected and <br />preserved at various stages in their development. They will become part <br />of the Fish and Wildlife Museum collection in Fort Collins, Colorado and <br />should be useful for speciation of the Gila complex; <br />Humpback chub propagation. - Several humpback chub females from the <br />Colorado River, Black Rocks strain, were injected and,,on May 21 produced <br />only a partial; spawn of 100 eggs from only one female: Since the Grand <br />Junction field crew reported humpback in spawning condition in the Black <br />Rocks area, an effort was made to go there for the purpose of taking eggs <br />in the field. This trip was successful and 18,000 eggs were shipped to <br />Willow Beach NFH on June 4. An estimated 13,000-14,000 fry from this <br />field spawn are now being reared at Willow Beach. <br />The Little Colorado Ri_ve? strain of humpbacks held at Willow Beach were <br />spawned on June 6 and produced 13,000 eggs. However, the males, thought <br />to be ripe, were not producing much sperm and therefore these eggs could <br />not be fertilized`. On the second try the following day 5,700 eggs were <br />taken and fertilized. These efforts resulted in the production of 2,000 <br />f ry. <br />A developmental series is being collected of the Black Rocks strain of <br />humpback chub and will be handled as mentioned above. <br />Striped bass study. - There is no report on this contracted study at <br />this time. However, we do know that approximately 200 striped bass <br />were taken in the Colorado River below Cataract Canyon. These fish were
