2. Reduce use of trammel nets and replace by gill nets because of
the seemingly greater entanglement stress to the fish from the
I
trammel nets.
3. Increase use of 220-watt D.C. electrofishing boats, particularly
in intervening reaches between intensive study sections.
4. Reduce or discontinue use of wire traps because of the high
abrasion to trapped fish as well as the inconvenience of carrying
the bulky traps on boats and rafts;
5. Experiment with the use of a shrimp trawl with various mesh sizes to-
sample the midchannel.
6. Initiate or increase angling effort for endangered fishes as a
legitimate sample gear.
It has been obvserved that a reorganization of strata in the Gunnison and
Colorado Rivers would enable better characterization of the fish fauna.
It is recommended that the strata for these two rivers be increased from
9to11.
A significant population of humpback chub has been identified in West-
water Canyon. It is therefore suggested that a special study be established
in Westwater Canyon to determine the abundance, distrubution, and life history
of the humpback chub in that area to supplement studies of the species
in Black Rocks and the Little Colorado River.
