64
1980 INVESTIGATIVE PROGRAM
The 1980 investigative program will be conducted in similar fashion to
the 1979 program to allow for statistical comparison and integration of
data between 1979 and 1980.
The shortened 1979 field season permitted only one or two sample visits
to each of the river stratum. In 1980, each stratum will be sampled
three times with the same sample techniques and methodology.
Increased effort is planned in spring 1980 to assess timing and location
of spawning humpback chubs in Black Rocks and Westwater Canyon. Efforts
will be made to capture and hold ripe and gravid fish and strip eggs for
use in hatchery rearing experiments. Habitat information will also be
recorded-for spawning sites.
Spawning and habitat information will be recorded for Colorado squawfish
in spring and early summer. A radio tagging program is to be initiated
to better follow spawning behavior of squawfish and to define specific
spawning areas so as to determine the constituents of spawning habitats.
Next year, data will be collected on food habits of young-of-year squawfish
and all sympatric species from one area in both the Colorado and Green
Rivers. Further work will be conducted on patterns of use of the backwater
areas and the hydraulics and biological factors that influence the
utilization of this particular habitat by squawfish.
