Recommended Changes
The 1979 field investigations revealed the need for several modifications
to the sample schedule and technique, as well as the opportunity to
identify critical sample areas and times more concisely. The following
is a synopsis of those recommendations:
Black Rocks and Walter Walker Wildlife area shouldbe sampled at critical
times i.e. in May-June to identify spawning time and habitat of humpback
chub and in July-August to identify spawning habitat and success _
of Colorado squawfish.
A completely randomized selection of river strata often results in
sampling adjacent strata far from Grand Junction at two distinct times
necessitating additional travel-time and expense. The three strata
between Potash and Hite Marina, for example, should'be sampled sequentially
because of the extensive logistics of rafting through this river reach.
A systematic progressive sampling schedule is suggested when logistics
dictate.
Experience has demonstrated the relative effectiveness of different
gears in the velocity of habitats encountered, the following changes
are recommended for gear use during 1980.
1. Reduce use of seines 1/2 inch mesh or larger because of the high
effort and low success involved in their use.
