61 <br />Significant Findings <br />The most significant finding of this study was the capture of 10 adult, <br />1 juvenile, and 2 young humpback chubs in Westwater Canyon (RM 111-125). <br />Located about 11 miles downstream from Black Rocks (the largest known <br />humpback chub population in the Upper Colorado River), Westwater Canyon <br />has deep, swift water with habitat similar to that of Black Rocks. <br />Seven Colorado squawfish, including 1 adult, 1 juvenile, and 5 young <br />were also captured in Westwater Canyon. Special studies are recommended <br />to determine the abundance, distribution, and life history of the chubs <br />and squawfish in Westwater Canyon. <br />Also of significance was the capture of 241 young and 21 juvenile squawfish <br />from the 47-mile stratum above the Green River confluence. One seine <br />haul at mile 34.8 yielded 106 young. <br />Although most of the young squawfish were captured near the Green River <br />confluence, squawfish captured further upstream were of significance. <br />One juvenile (1978 year class) was caught near RM 138 in Colorado, the <br />furtherest upstream capture of a young squawfish in several years. <br />These findings are significant because they indicate successful spawning <br />by squawfish in 1978 and 1979 in several areas of the Upper Colorado <br />River. <br />
