61
Significant Findings
The most significant finding of this study was the capture of 10 adult,
1 juvenile, and 2 young humpback chubs in Westwater Canyon (RM 111-125).
Located about 11 miles downstream from Black Rocks (the largest known
humpback chub population in the Upper Colorado River), Westwater Canyon
has deep, swift water with habitat similar to that of Black Rocks.
Seven Colorado squawfish, including 1 adult, 1 juvenile, and 5 young
were also captured in Westwater Canyon. Special studies are recommended
to determine the abundance, distribution, and life history of the chubs
and squawfish in Westwater Canyon.
Also of significance was the capture of 241 young and 21 juvenile squawfish
from the 47-mile stratum above the Green River confluence. One seine
haul at mile 34.8 yielded 106 young.
Although most of the young squawfish were captured near the Green River
confluence, squawfish captured further upstream were of significance.
One juvenile (1978 year class) was caught near RM 138 in Colorado, the
furtherest upstream capture of a young squawfish in several years.
These findings are significant because they indicate successful spawning
by squawfish in 1978 and 1979 in several areas of the Upper Colorado
River.
