P. Csi,?Iri E;nginetrri?rg Reprll•i, C use No.2005-04'-258
low,n qf.avun's Rec:reutional Irt-Channel Uivrrsiari (RICD) li•ater Right in the Eugle Itiver
termed "Park and Play", is what creates a popular destination. A"Rodeo" is the typical
name given to a freestyle kayaking competition; these competitions are often staged at
individual whitewater features.
A whitewater feature is created where there is a"hydraulic jump," which is an abrupt rise
in the water surface of a channel. A hydraulic jump can occur naturally, or can be
created (as in a whitewater park) by the placement of structures or boulders in the river
bed. The hydraulic jump is what creates the freestyle recreational experience. A
hydraulic jump in the river channel is typically referred to as a wave, a hole or a wave-
hole.
Three features are being implemented at Avon. Each is designed to appeal to a different
skill level, similar to the skill levels associated with blue, black, and double black
diamond runs at a ski area. The natural class of the rapid in the Avon course is Class III.
True novice boaters are not expected in the course. Even a beginning freestyle kayaker
must have certain kayak skills such as "eddy catching", "ferrying", "bracing" and "wet
exiY" or "combat rolling". Beginner freestyle kayakers would be able to practice and
hone skills in the small hole at the designed "Baby Bob" feature. Intermediate freestyle
kayakers would be able to expand on their hole surfing skills with wave tricks at the wave
hole of the designed "Bob Jr." feature. Advanced freestyle kayakers require wave
features to hydroplane the kayak for advanced moves. The designed "Bob Sr." feature
would provide opportunity for advanced freestyle kayakers and a venue to host "Rodeo"
competitions.
III. Reach Length
The distance from the invert of the upstream feature to the downstream feature is 348 feet
and also the length of the corresponding RICD. There is a total hydraulic drop within the
reach of 5.5 feet. The average slope is 1.6% from structure to structure. The average
widths range between 35-65 feet. The site is designed to be navigable for its entire
length.
IV. Measurement and Administration of the RICD
The project is fortunate to have the USGS GAGE #090670201ocated 3,200 feet
downstream of Bob Sr. Administration of the RICD by the Division Engineer may be
based on measurements from this gage, with or without accounting for the inflows and
outflows that occur between RICD reach and gage. The following 3 diversions and 2
returns are located between the RICD and the gage:
1. Beaver Creek Golf course return 10 feet downstream.
2. Beaver Creek Metro District Pump Station 240 feet downstream (October
through Winter)
2 of 11
, A I VE R Jz,tW 2006
M.X...
???
